Deaf schools in Holland and Curaçao communicate using AP-100 video phones.

Deaf youngsters in two schools in Curaçao and Holland can now talk to each other with sign language thanks to a project involving AP-100 video phones.

The project connects the schools for the deaf, Scola Myrna Dovale in Willemstad, Curaçao in the Dutch Antilles and SG Effatha in Zoetermeer in the Netherlands.

Previously the school in the Netherlands supported the school in Curaçao with sign language courses by physically sending a deaf teacher to Curaçao from time to time.

The AP-100 video phones have enabled the deaf children in two geographically remote countries to learn from each other, broaden their horizons and make new friends overseas. Additionally, the deaf teachers in the two locations conduct regular sign language conversations to share ideas, experiences and methods.

Vi-taal, a Hague based design company specializing in sign language solutions, initiated the video phone project with United Telecommunications Services helping the school in Curaçao with technical support. The Dutch Foundation 'Stichting Vrienden van Effatha' provided the funding.
